I think I understood transactions incorrectly. After reading up on them on http://code.google.com/appengine/docs/java/datastore/transactions.html#Isolation_and_Consistency, it seems they are always executed one after the other, never concurrently. Therefore, they could fail (because of the optimistic concurrency), and you can handle that by catching the JDOCanRetryException.
