You are correct that writing to memcache is by far the cheapest way to save data. A cron job to periodically persist the changes to the datastore is required if you care to make sure your data isn't lost. Memcache can be flushed for any reason at any time. The frequency of the cron job will determine how durable your data is vs how much cost you are comfortable with as far as writes to the datastore.
