Personally, I don't like to rely on "google the same technology for their own sites" as the definitive answer, because app engine does not give us unlimited access to google's infrastructure. For example, maybe it only scales well if you have unlimited indexes, or maybe appengine itself adds some overhead to bigtable that scales poorly. I think it's healthy for us to have a bit of skepticism when it comes to any new technology, and asking questions of this group and experiments like djidjadji's help to prove, rather than hype, appengine's true capabilities. With all this being said, I'm pretty sure that yeah, it'll scale just fine :-)
