Well as I said I installed the getttext package from Fink (archive of Mac GNU packages, etc.). It didn't come with xgettext, and there's no xgettext on my system other than "xgettext.pl" in the Apple developer folders. When I symlinked that as "xgettext", I got a bunch of errors running makemessages anyway, so I'm not thinking it's the same.
