Ok, I jst noticed I was doing the opposite of what you suggested, from the doc:
To serve a file with a custom MIME type, make the file a resource file instead of a static file, and create a servlet that serves the data with the custom MIME type. Does this mean I have to make my sistemaps resource files in the appengine-web.xml and implement a servlet just to serve them as text?
