Please add your vote to issue 776 (http://code.google.com/p/ googleappengine/issues/detail?id=776) which would address your need very nicely.
I have the same issue with a Facebook application. As the amount of stored data grows, it just doesn't make sense for all of the data to move in and out of the datacenter just to make a snapshot for staging or backup purposes.
