My experience wasn't that complicated. I made sure I wasn't logged
into any other Google accounts, then clicked the link in the email
(there were two, one for Google Accounts and another for Apps
accounts). It just added it to my list.

I didn't have to add a mobile number, nor create an app. It just
shared the one I was invited to as I would expect.
