I just checked out the EU data protection situation for this, and seems to be okay....
Although the US isn't on the list of countries with "adequate protection", data sent to the US under the "Safe Harbor" scheme /is/ considered adequately protected, and Google is registered with said scheme. So though it would definitely be nice to be able to choose an EU data-centre, the situation is at least not as bad as it might be.
