GAE does not allow this. In other words, yes, on GAE you have to live with Datastore-backed persistence.
It is weird though that you're getting error message mentioning GAE when you're not using it. You might be able to tell "how much is GAE actually disabled" by contents of Project -> Properties -> Java Build Path -> Libraries.
