Just guessing here,

I worked for a few weeks with cassandra (another nosql, like
bigtable), and it seems distributed deletes are really hard to do.
Basically, deletes will not free up your memory inmediatly (more like
in a week or so). That would explain your problems.

Well, but that just how it works on cassandra.
