Excellent pointers. I have to be a little vague about my use case. Let me just say that I am trying to create an ecosystem within an ecosystem -- ideally an application suite within a single GAE App account. Nothing outside the GAE terms mind, but it can mean multiple programmers operating on the same "humongous" datastore but via a well-defined API which is impossible to bypass. For efficiency reasons, it would be almost impossible to police so I am looking for platform-imposed isolation. The two-app (or multi-app) solution would seem to be the likeliest outcome however this poses other problems which have been alluded to above.
All of the suggestions given are interesting -- I will need to absorb them and figure a way out. And if I come up with any useful nuggets, I will return the compliment.
