The geographic location does add some latency, but I want to make two points here:
- Slow asset loading - use cache control headers and high performance image serving when possible as these are served from your nearest Google edge servers. Your static content is often several times the size of your actual HTML page or JSON response - More likely than not, your requests will experience cross-continental Google data center to Google data center traffic. We've heavily optimized this such that if there is a significant difference between a request to App Engine versus a request to a data center you own in North America. Still, it's not insignificant, but you can often times mitigate what the user actually sees. There are many, many tricks to making things appear to load faster.
