I do make heavy use of JSON -- both in the browser and stored in
TextProperties.  But, sometimes you need fields indexed or usable for
ordering.

Directly using the low-level interface is an interesting idea.  Seems
like you might wind up reproducing much of the higher-level interface
yourself though.
