Thanks! CURRENT_VERSION_ID seems like it should work perfectly. I'm using java and I couldn't find any documentation about that variable in the Java docs, but it appears to be this system property: com.google.appengine.application.version.
I'm going to set up a ServletContextListener to check the Y version diff in its contextInitialized() method. Should work great.
