There was a plan to remove the GIL: http://code.google.com/p/unladen-swallow/wiki/ProjectPlan#Global_Interpreter_Lock But it died and the devs of Unladen Swallow moved on to Go: http://qinsb.blogspot.com/2011/03/unladen-swallow-retrospective.html So don't expect magic.
