I see this very differently. With GAE, Google has become my sysadmin;
with AWS I need to be (or employ) a sysadmin. So I'm comfortable
paying more for GAE.

And another point - when comparing GAE and AWS, don't forget scaling
and redundancy. So you're not talking about a single AWS instance -
you need at least two, preferably in different regions, and elastic
load balancing. I once ran an app on a linux box, and when time came
to scale, it was VERY involved.

If you're a sysadmin at heart, you'll probably be happier on AWS where
you can tinker with iptables and ntpd. But if you are a developer, GAE
is a very good deal in my opinion.
