there are plenty of examples of people using GAE with non-browsers. Using it as a web service isn't uncommon. I know there are android apps and iOS apps that uses GAE as the backend web services. So I don't think you are doing anything unusual or uncommon.
JSON, XML is all fair game. Heck, python side google even added ProtoRPC.
