It depends on what the app does. Your question is like asking "can I pay my rent singing?" I don't know I haven't heard you sing.
If your app parses the human genome, folds proteins, or searches for ET. No. You likely can't fund it with Adsense. If it picks a random pirate name for your Visitors, and always chooses "Pink Beard the Bold", then yes you can pay for the hosting costs with GAE. Clearly people were planning for profit businesses on App engine.
