After periodically retrying a deploy over the course of a 12 hour period, I finally filed a production issue regarding 500 errors connecting to https://appengine.google.com/:
http://code.google.com/p/googleappengine/issues/detail?id=5842 I was told it was a configuration issue with backends, but I don't have any backends in my project. I tried creating a dummy, empty backend configuration, but I still get 500 errors when trying to deploy. If anyone else is having issues deploying new versions of their app, you may wish to star the issue (they've re-named the issue to simply being a server error message issue which I believe is incorrect).
