I think the reason google do it is to manage people signing up for
multiple accounts (lots of incentive with the generous free quota) -
its a lot harder to get lots of disposable mobile numbers, than it is
to get another email address.

It doesnt  'verify' the email as such, so still subject to typos etc.
It does however help with fighting spambots...


(and search this group for links to the sms waitlist form. Lots of
people obvisoully fail to pass sms validation)
