I always found that startup errors and datastore errors happened at the same time. I assume instances are getting the code from the datastore.
For reasons unknown, the master slave datastore is broken and Google's solution is hrd. I was in the same mental position as you at the beginning of December, cursing Google over pos that is the msd, filing issues and appealing to Googlers to fix it, looking at the mess that is migration and thinking no way.
