Sorry, Mike, I thought I was responding to a message on the Python group. 
Hopefully someone with better knowledge of Java will respond.

FWIW It is possible to run a Python or Go version of you app under the same 
application namespace. This can be done either as a backend or as a separate 
version of your app. It would then have access to the same datastore / 
blobstore.
