Hi,
This is a very very very good topic.
--> Is GAE a toy ? My conclusion after 4 months of intensive work with it
is that it is clearly not a toy. I have been able to develop an application
with 93,000 lines of code in Java which delivers the functional and
non-functional requirements. The application is currently in user
acceptance test and the end-users are very happy about the product and they
are impressed by the response time.
--> Does Google make enough publicity ? Clearly not and that could lead to
problems in the future with the competition become better and better.
My recommendations would be along the following lines :
*I. Increase awareness*
--> Interview senior management of Google explaining the long-term
commitment and roadmap of the product. Google I/O could be a very good
opportunity
--> Post on the front pag of GAE an updated list of web sites using GAE
together with the industry they support (e.g. Marketing, Games, Finance,
...)
--> Send regularly reports about number of developers / number of
applications
*II. Architecture support
* --> Provide architecture / data diagrams of existing applications using
GAE. This relates to a problem I had figuring out how to model
entity-relationships + question I had on how to structure the application.
*III. Improve datastore backup / restore functionalities
* --> A lot of work has been done recently on the backup / restore
functionalities but I still miss the following :
--> Backup / restore by namespace. Without this, it is very difficult
to deploy a multi-tenant application which is one of the key advantages of
the cloud platforms. Currently, backup / restore by namespace requires
developer coding but this should become a commodity
--> Backup / restore for blobstore also by namespace
