It just feels like an update on GAE side went wrong. There has been quite a few latency problems these last few weeks.
For example, this is the Java Dynamic Get latency page for october 16 : <https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6GCiuo0ryO0/UIubNvStDII/AAAAAAAAvRs/UUnKPRHD6Y4/s1600/Google+App+Engine+Java+Status+-+Google+Chrome.jpg> http://code.google.com/status/appengine/detail/serving-java/2012/10/16 Yesterday it suddenly improved around 4PM as you can see on the following diagram : <https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-BMX1DmyKrkU/UIubtnenwcI/AAAAAAAAvR0/_Noqew_jk4k/s1600/Google+App+Engine+Java+Status+-+Google+Chrome_2.jpg> http://code.google.com/status/appengine/detail/serving-java/2012/10/25 And then the crash. But you can see that after the system restore, we are back to some higher latency than before, I guess Google rolled back the update : <https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-HilYS9OhWss/UIuc-ZTC3YI/AAAAAAAAvR8/QrehlCrwv04/s1600/PrtScr+capture.jpg> http://code.google.com/status/appengine/detail/serving-java/2012/10/26 Sadly, the update seemed to improve latency quite significantly. Hoping will get a fix soon.
