I have the same problem with all of my apps, I guess it is related to the 1.7.3 released recently, which was supposed to fix an issue right on this problem. http://code.google.com/p/googleappengine/issues/detail?id=483
Ironically I was perfectly able to change authentication type until a few days ago, when the issue was fixed.
