We use https under the appspot domain. 90% of our requests are https.
running a Java webapp that is 2 years now on appengine.

I've not been tracking latency with an external service. Our 
clients(retail) are a very vocal bunch. 3 seconds of "Please wait..." and 
they're on the phone.
