Thanks for the response (for some reason I just got the e-mail notification 
of it now).

I'm already using Cloud Endpoints (with multiple client apps).  The Cloud 
Backends I was referring to were introduced at IO13.  They are unrelated to 
GAE Backends though they run on GAE.

Using Cloud Endpoints I got focussed on User authentication, and somehow 
missed the option for app authentication that you described.   Thanks for 
the links.
