The problem occurred because of a particular .png image (actually 39 of them). I was able to upload it to blob store and even view it in blob store viewer.
But get_serving_url fails with an null exception when trying to create a url. I am also not able to upload it here with the image icon ... it says it is not a valid png. There is clearly something wrong with it but it is good enough to be able to convert. Pretty confusing.
