Did you set the mobile backend application to *Open* (step 8 in the deployment process: https://developers.google.com/cloud/samples/mbs/deploy_backend )? Do you see any error logs or requests on the App Engine application's logs? In addition, try inspecting the outbound connections from your Android device and seeing where the connection is going to.
