I understand I must create an admin account for my app in order to send email from that address (e.g. [email protected]). However, if example.com is a domain alias in my Google apps account am I just out of luck? Based on this 3 year old issue I'd say yes: https://code.google.com/p/googleappengine/issues/detail?id=4546
