If I recall correctly, datastore was a founding feature of App Engine,
baked in since the beginning. So you could also say since launch.

App Engine's early marketing materials didn't directly refer to the
datastore - instead, they usually said something along the lines of
"BigTable-esque storage" or "with BigTable technology". You can see this
with the first announcements of App Engine (links below). The reason is
because Google had previously released scientific papers discussing their
use of custom databases such as BigTable, and a big pull to use App Engine
in those early days was the chance to access
never-before-publically-available Google tech.
