I'm not certain of every circumstance where this will work, but this is how we do it:
If you set up [email protected] as a Developer on your project then you'll be able to send emails "from" that address. You can just setup a Google Accounts account for [email protected] and then invite the account to be a Developer on your project; no GApps account required.
