Good question, I had not realized that now even the docs mention it… Let’s hope 
this is imminent, it has been hinted for years. In just the past year we have 
heard from Google associates in this group:

Nov 14, 2014: "I hope to have some good news to share here in the not too 
distant future.”
Aug 17, 2015: "the imminently-to-be-released Custom Domains SSL process”
