Hello Glen When doing client Login and obtaining a auth token you do not need to pass the domain name. It is mainly needed when you are making calls to the API. For example you can obtain auth token using cURL<http://code.google.com/apis/gdata/articles/using_cURL.html#authenticating-clientlogin>. Can you try authenticating using cURL and let me know if you still get the same error?
