A normal impression would be from a normal Google service, Google Base, Google Product Search or Google Web Search.
An API impression would be from a application or website that is using the Google Base API to programmatically display items from Google Base. A good example would be my web app here : http://dev.tomthedeveloper.com/googlebase items show here would be classed as API impressions.
