I'm not familiar with PHP (yes I need to learn :) ) but it is strange
that the insert is working with a test product and not with your
production items.
Could the error come from the data then? maybe you are trying to pass
a value that would make the item rejected.

Could you copy paste here an example of item that works (the test
product) and an example of item that do not work? (attributes =
values...)
