Testing outside of Eclipse shows same overly described behavior above.
This is the craziest problem I have ever encountered. No errors, no
exceptions, just hangs. As a desperate move I did test service.getFeed
and that does return a result set.

Thank you again to everyone who is helping on this. I don't know how
else to determine what is going on. Still stuck at nothing
accomplished on this project.
