Transform functions are defined at
http://dev.w3.org/csswg/css-transforms/#two-d-transform-functions and 3-d
transforms are defined in the next section.
translate-{x,y} and the more general matrix functions allow everything that
negative margins do
but I don't see any problem with these as long as they respect clipping
regions.
