Primary that they hide some of the details and specifics of the HTTP
interactions and provide parsing code for the content model (for
hard-typed languages like Java or C#).

But everything is documented about the HTTP interaction model and the
XML content model, so it's possible to work w/out the client libraries
as well, it just means you have to write more code.
