I should investigate even more before posting here. Here's what I've learned...
The "<link rel='edit' ...>" does NOT appear unless you use the "private" URL so that it's read/write. In other words, you have to remove the magicCookie part of the URL and request the "full" feed. This, of course, requires you to authenticate before accessing it. No worries, I just changed my app around so it requires the user to authenticate first and use the "edit" link as the URL. Works like a charm.
