I am a little confused. It's my understanding that the Google calendar API is simply broken wrt recurrence, as has been posted to (and confirmed) on this list. I get the impression from your email that you seem to have recurrence support working. Does this mean it's actually possible to somehow use recurrence with the Java client API?
