I strongly suspect the problem is on the Google side of the wire.

I get "Premature end of file" errors often enough that I wrote retry
code into my app (which uses straight HTTP as opposed to one of the
toolkits). I see this error from two different machines (one at my
house, the other in a datacenter 1,500 miles away), neither of which is
behind a proxy.

Personally, I think it all may have to do with the use of velcro:
