Thanks Frank for the quick response. I figured out the solution. It was amazingly simple but puzzling as to why it was necessary.
This was my first attempt at using the the API. I was using the latest version of the library (1.0.9.6) and was developing for a Mobile 5 pocket pc. When I created the project I used the device application template for said device. The error occurred during the first stage of the build. The solution was to right-click on the project name in solution explorer and choose "Upgrade Project".
