Is there a chance such a feature might be added, or better yet, the existing
query semantics modified to include those events which start before the
range start date?

If I understand correctly, the current behavior is that only those events
which start within the query period are returned. That, however, makes it
impossible to efficiently display a particular window on a calender - you
never know how far back your query needs to extend to ensure there's no
overlap. With "vacation-like" events, this might actually occur for a
significant period back.
