The only way that I have been able to do this is by deleting the recurring event and creating a brand new single event. Similarly changing a single event to a recurring event directly fails for me.
The only problem with that is the id of the event changes. Though this is not surprising since changing a single event to a recurring event using the GUI also changes the event id.
