You might want to check out the Gmarks Firefox plugin. I am not sure
if their code is open source, but they do have a Google group where
you could ask.

The reason I suggest this is that I think they are somehow detecting
when a person is logged into Google services because when I first
launch Firefox my Gmarks sidebar will be empty. But as soon as I log
into Gmail I can hit the "Retry" button in the Gmarks sidebar and it
will load my bookmarks.
