Found the problem on my end, though why reminders do not show up with the private link for one feed and do on another is still baffling to me.
Anyway, I was seeing reminders on recurring events because on recurring events, the top level event node contains the gd:reminder tags for the recurrence (one or more gd:when tags returned also contained the gd:reminder tags).
