I'm a little unsatisfied with the solution as well. I experimented a bit with passing different strings to the chl parameter. The underscore and carrot (^) symbols appear to work as subscript and superscript operators. I don't really see any reason why _- should render slightly differently than a subscripted dash though, as in a_- for example.
