A little further investigation reveals that this has been asked
several times before with no luck.

I see there are a couple of issues for this too:
http://code.google.com/p/support/issues/detail?id=3919 to be able to
manually add, remove and delete items for the Update list and
http://code.google.com/p/support/issues/detail?id=1751 to be able to
reset the Updates list completely.
