The instructions on the wiki should work if you use the standard trunk/branches/tags layout. If you have a nonstandard layout, you may need to specify an option like --branch to get your branches working; see the git-svn(1) manpage for more details.
I don't know if we have any git-svn experts on this list, but if you provide a little more information I may be able to help you. Unfortunately, it's somewhat unlikely you'll be able to restructure your repo to have branches without recreating the entire thing.
